Responsibilities

The City of West Melbourne Board of Adjustment hears and decides on the following matters:

  • Applications for special exceptions
  • Applications for variances
  • Appeals where it is alleged there is error in any order, requirement, decision, or determination made by the Planning and Zoning Board.

Applications are located in the Document Center under Planning and Growth Management, Development Applications.

The City's Land Development Regulations, available for viewing on Municode, provide the criteria and guidelines for the Board of Adjustment and the public hearings conducted on development matters.

Composition

There is one Board of Adjustment for the City of West Melbourne. The board consists of seven members. At least four of the members of the Board of Adjustment shall have previously served: on a planning and zoning board; or on a code enforcement board; or as an elected municipal officer; or, as a professional member of a planning organization. Each appointed member of the Board of Adjustment shall serve a two-year staggered term. The two year term of appointment for appointees occupying odd numbered seats expire by the end of November in odd numbered years and the two year term of appointment for appointees occupying even numbered years and the two year term of appointment for appointees occupying even numbered seats expire by the end of November in even numbered years.
